DLC-coated valve lifters - what is it?
DLC-coated lifters cut friction and extend the life of the cam and lifters. Learn what Diamond-Like Carbon does and when you need it. A guide from Meksta.

DLC stands for Diamond-Like Carbon - an extremely thin layer of carbon based coating applied to the lifter's contact surface against the cam lobe. Even though the layer is very thin, it lets the lifter withstand higher spring pressure and creates less friction against the cam lobe.
What does the DLC coating do?
DLC coating has properties similar to diamond: it is extremely hard, resists wear and corrosion, and has very low friction. When it is applied to the contact surface of the lifter (the cam bucket), several advantages result:
- Reduced friction: Lower friction between the cam lobe and lifter improves the engine's efficiency and reduces energy losses.
- Increased wear resistance: The hard surface prevents wear and extends the life of both the lifter and the camshaft. Unlike flat tappet lifters, which require careful break-in, DLC lifters need no special break-in procedure.
- Improved stiffness: Increased stiffness in the lifter gives more precise valve movement at high RPM.
- Lower oil temperature: Less friction generates less heat, which can lower the oil temperature.
Design advantages
Besides the DLC coating, quality lifters often have a reinforced skirt and a larger internal radius compared to OEM parts. Together these improvements contribute to lower friction, better torque transfer and cooler oil temperatures.
When do you need DLC lifters?
DLC coated valve lifters are especially valuable in:
- Racing applications: Where the load on the valve train is extreme and standard components do not provide sufficient durability.
- Highly tuned street cars: With aggressive cam profiles and high spring pressures.
- High RPM engines: Where friction losses from the valve train become significant.
- Engine builds focused on long service life: DLC extends the service intervals for the camshaft and lifters.
Does it suit my engine?
DLC lifters are available for many popular engine platforms and should already be part of the planning when you choose a camshaft. Contact us at Meksta and we will tell you what is available for your specific engine build.
