Our own machine shop

The MD2030 is the 3-cylinder mid model in Volvo Penta's MD2010-2040 range of small sailboat diesels. We usually see it in 25-35 foot cruising yachts that have run their 3 000-6 000 operating hours and are starting to show the typical symptoms: glow-plug starting problems, seawater corrosion in the exhaust elbow, falling compression and sooty injectors. The block (Shibaura-based cast iron, marinised by Volvo Penta) is robust and stands up to a full rebuild, but it is the ancillaries - heat exchanger, exhaust elbow, raw-water pump, injection pump - that usually determine the scope needed. We handle everything from cylinder head reconditioning, cylinder boring and crankshaft reconditioning to complete engine reconditioning in our own machine shop with a 12 month warranty. See also our hub page for boat engine rebuilds.

The MD2030 in the MD2010-2040 family

A shared workshop manual and a shared torque table with its own column per model. The MD2030 is the 3-cylinder 0.95-litre model. Cylinder head torque and highly loaded fasteners differ between columns - the values below are read from the MD2030 column, never borrowed from a sibling.

ModelCyl / DisplacementPower
MD20102-cyl / 0,45 L~10 hk
MD20203-cyl / 0,68 L~18 hk
MD20303-cyl / 0,95 L~29 hk
MD20403-cyl / 1,50 L~40 hk

NOTE - production discontinued. Manufacturing ran from roughly 1994-2006. Sub-versions A/B/C/D across the production run. The D1-30 (130S generation) succeeded the MD2030 in the Volvo Penta range. Spare parts are still available through the Volvo Penta network and by cross-reference with related Shibaura small diesels.

Identity data

The power curve is what Volvo publishes for the MD2030. The torque across the rev range is ONLY curve data (identity data), not a tightening torque - Volvo never tabulates a peak Nm for output torque, so we state power in hp and not an output Nm.

20,2 kW = 28 hk

Tightening torque MD2030

All values are read directly from Volvo Penta's workshop manual MD2010/2020/2030/2040 (publ. 6531), MD2030 column (manual p.17 / PDF p.19). The cylinder head is tightened in three stages in sequence per Fig.31 with molybdenum disulfide grease on the threads. The MD2030 is not angle-tightened - the manual's protractor section does not apply to this head.

Fasteners without their own table value in the MD2030 column (intake/exhaust manifold, raw-water pump cover, camshaft retainer bolt) are tightened per the manual's general dimension-based torque table - we never guess a torque. A peak Nm for output torque is not tabulated and is therefore not shown as a value.

Cross-verified against the YBW Forum, Volvo Penta owner groups, marine service bulletins and our own workshop experience with the MD2010-2040 range.

Exhaust elbow and exhaust pipe corrode

5-8 seasonsHigh
Symptoms
Salt water in the wake, sooty colour on the exhaust, white smoke when warm, salt drops under the engine.
Cause
The raw-water cooled exhaust elbow has aluminium and steel components. Salt water causes internal corrosion - perforation can let seawater be drawn back into the cylinders if the engine sits idle. Stainless steel upgrades are available from several suppliers.

Start preheating and glow plugs fail

Common on cold startHigh
Symptoms
Sluggish cold start, white starting smoke, the engine has to crank for a long time before it fires, rough running for the first few minutes.
Cause
The MD2030 is indirect-injection and depends on the glow plugs (10.5 V) for cold starting. Aged glow plugs, corroded contacts and weak starting current cause sluggish starts. The glow plugs are tightened to 15-20 Nm per the factory table.

Heat exchanger blocked internally

RecurringMedium
Symptoms
Lowered thermostat opening temperature, overheating under load, lower peak rpm.
Cause
Scale and salt deposits on the raw-water side. The tubes in the tubular heat exchanger clog up and cooling capacity drops. The thermostat opens at around 82 degrees.

Raw-water impeller breaks apart

RecurringMedium
Symptoms
No cooling water flow, overheating within minutes, blades from the impeller lodge in the heat exchanger.
Cause
The rubber impeller cannot take dry running - roughly 15-30 seconds without water is enough to destroy it. The seating surface in the pump housing wears.

Injector nozzles coke up

3,000+ hoursMedium
Symptoms
Rough idle, black smoke under load, falling peak rpm, increased fuel consumption.
Cause
Natural wear on the nozzle needles and coking of the diesel residue in the nozzle tip. The opening pressure is checked to 11.3-12.3 MPa. The nozzle holder is tightened to 80-85 Nm.

Questions and answers about the MD2030

Is the MD2030 still in production?

No. Manufacturing ran from roughly 1994-2006. The D1-30 (130S generation) replaced the MD2030 in the Volvo Penta range. Spare parts are still available through the Volvo Penta network and by cross-reference with related Shibaura small diesels.

What does it cost to rebuild a Volvo Penta MD2030?

A cylinder head reconditioning costs 5 500-7 500 kr in labour. A complete engine rebuild 24 000-36 000 kr in labour, plus parts typically 7 000-15 000 kr depending on condition. Marine components (exhaust elbow, heat exchanger, raw-water pump) often add 4 500-11 000 kr.

Is the MD2030 turbocharged?

No. The MD2030 is naturally aspirated across the whole production run. It is a 3-cylinder indirect-injection sailboat diesel of 29 hp. There is no turbo version in the MD2010-2040 range.

Which block does the MD2030 use?

A Shibaura-based industrial block (IHI Shibaura), marinised by Volvo Penta. The factory manual shows the SHIBAURA marking cast into the piston crown. It is NOT a Perkins block, even though related Perkins small diesels share the same Shibaura origin. The block is a tunnel design in high-alloy cast iron with the crankshaft in 4 main bearings.

What is the cylinder head torque on the MD2030?

The cylinder head bolts are tightened in three stages per the factory manual (publ. 6531), MD2030 column: stage 1 = 20 Nm, stage 2 = 35 Nm and final torque 50-53 Nm, with molybdenum disulfide grease on the threads. The MD2030 is not angle-tightened. Do not forget that the prescribed sequence per Fig.31 must be followed.

How long does an MD2030 last?

5 000-10 000 operating hours with the right maintenance. The Shibaura-based block is industrial and takes more than that - it is the heat exchanger, exhaust elbow, raw-water pump and injection pump that typically set the limit. A well rebuilt MD2030 gives the owner another 15-20 seasons.

How long does an MD2030 rebuild take?

Cylinder head reconditioning: 1-2 weeks. Complete engine rebuild: 3-5 weeks in the workshop, plus lead time on parts (injection pump, heat exchanger, exhaust elbow). The winter season (October-April) is the busiest - book in good time.
