Boat engine & marine engine rebuild
Marine engines face extreme conditions - saltwater, moisture, long idle periods and intense load during the season. Meksta rebuilds marine engines of every make with the same precision and care we have put into every engine for 30+ years.
We work with Volvo Penta, Mercury, Yamaha, MerCruiser, Suzuki, Honda Marine, Yanmar and other marine engine manufacturers. Whether it is an inboard, an outboard or a sterndrive, we have the experience.

Common problems with marine engines
Marine engines have specific weak points that set them apart from land vehicles. Here are the most common problems we fix.
Saltwater corrosion
Saltwater breaks down metal from the inside. Cooling passages and cylinder heads corrode and start to leak. We rebuild every affected part.
Overheating
Blocked cooling passages or failed impellers lead to overheating, which can cause cracked cylinder heads and burnt gaskets.
Winter damage
Water left behind expands below freezing and leads to frost-cracked blocks and cylinder heads in cast iron or aluminium.
Wear from standing idle
Engines left standing for long periods risk sludge build-up and dry cracks in the seals.
Cylinder wear
Heavy load on the water causes cylinder wear. We bore and hone marine engines exactly to factory tolerances.
Turbocharger and charge air
Turbocharged marine engines face salt air, high exhaust temperatures and long spells under full load. The result is worn bearings, corroded turbine housings and leaking wastegates. We rebuild turbochargers to OEM specification with new bearings, seals and balancing.
Crankshaft wear
Saltwater in the oil and vibration quickly wear the bearing surfaces. We grind, polish and balance the crankshaft to OEM specification.
What does a marine engine rebuild include?
A marine engine rebuild at Meksta is always tailored to the condition of the engine and the owner's needs. We start with a thorough inspection and assessment before we give a quote.
Typical work steps
- Disassembly and cleaning of all components
- Inspection of cylinders, crankshaft and cylinder head
- Cylinder boring and honing to factory tolerances
- Cylinder head reconditioning - resurfacing and pressure testing
- Crankshaft grinding and polishing as needed
- Replacement of bearings, piston rings and marine-grade gaskets
- Turbo reconditioning with balancing and new bearings as needed
- Boiling out of saltwater passages
- Assembly and quality control
